Mykonos
Eight weeks of terrace dinners and the highest logistics premium in Greece
Season
When to host in Mykonos
Peak: July to August. Quiet: November to April.
- May to JuneThe island at its best: open, warm, green for another three weeks, and half the price of August. The meltemi is lighter in June than in July.
- July to AugustPeak and close to saturated. Every chef, waiter and van is committed, ferries are full, and a private dinner for twenty is quoted like a small wedding.
- September to OctoberThe locals’ reward. Sea at its warmest, prices falling weekly, and the light that everyone photographs badly in August.
- November to AprilClosed. The staff and most of the chefs winter in Athens, London or Dubai.
Venues
Where dinner happens
- Cycladic villas with terraces
- Built into the slope, usually with a shaded pergola that seats twelve to twenty four and a kitchen designed for two people.
- Beach clubs
- The easy option: licence, kitchen, staff and a loud neighbour at the next table.
- Chora courtyards
- Beautiful and impossible: everything is hand carried through lanes where no vehicle fits.
- Yachts and day boats
- Anchored dinners with a tender ferry. Cold menus and one hot dish, no exceptions.
Produce
What to build a menu on
- Island cheeses: kopanisti, tyrovolia, louza for a table of small dishes
- Fish is local but scarce in August, so order through a single supplier who holds allocation
- Most vegetables, meat and everything dairy arrives by ferry from Piraeus
- Greek wine has become the island’s strongest card, particularly Assyrtiko from Santorini
Staff
Hiring here
Service staff are seasonal, largely from Athens and the Balkans, and the good ones return to the same villas. A crew that has worked the house before is worth a 20 per cent premium because they know the wind and the lanes.
Rules
The paperwork nobody mentions
- Event licences
- Villas may not host commercial events without a licence, and the municipality checks in season. House guest dinners are unaffected.
- Noise
- A 23:00 limit in residential zones, enforced unevenly but enforced. Beach clubs hold their own licences.
- Logistics windows
- Delivery vans cannot enter Chora, ferries dictate when anything arrives, and a missed boat means a missed course. Build the menu so that one late delivery does not kill it.

Read onQuestions hosts ask
Why is Mykonos more expensive than Marbella?
Because everything but fish and cheese arrives by ferry, the season is eight weeks rather than nine months, and the staff and chefs are imported for it. The food is not twice as good, the logistics are twice as hard.
What does a terrace dinner for sixteen cost?
Between 4,800 and 7,500 euros in August with food, a chef, a sous chef, three waiters and rentals. In June or late September, 3,200 to 5,000.
How do I handle the wind?
Choose a sheltered position at the villa visit, not on the day. Heavy runners, glass hurricanes, closed bread baskets, weighted menu cards, and a dessert that does not involve anything that can fly.
