Tuscany
Villas, olive trees and a food culture that needs no help
Season
When to host in Tuscany
Peak: May to June, September. Quiet: November to March.
- April to JuneThe finest weeks: asparagus into early tomatoes, warm evenings from mid May, and the wedding calendar filling every Saturday from the second week of May.
- July to AugustHot and busy. Dinner moves to half past eight, the Florentine trade leaves for the coast in August, and villa prices peak with the tourist season.
- September to OctoberVendemmia and the best month of the year for a long table: grapes, porcini, figs, warm days and cool nights, with the olive harvest in late October.
- November to MarchQuiet, cheap and underrated. A winter dinner with white truffle in November or a Saturday lunch by a fire in February is excellent value.
Venues
Where dinner happens
- Villas and castles
- Purpose built for entertaining, with a limonaia for rain, a courtyard for the aperitivo and a loggia for thirty at one table.
- Agriturismi and wine estates
- The cellar as dining room, the estate as menu, and a kitchen that feeds guests daily.
- Olive terraces and garden allées
- The photograph everyone wants. Check the ground for heels and the distance for plates.
- City apartments in Florence
- Twelve at a table in a palazzo, with a kitchen built in 1950 and a lift built for two.
Produce
What to build a menu on
- Chianina beef, cinta senese pork, wild boar in autumn
- Pecorino from Pienza, ricotta that is two hours old, bread without salt
- Olive oil from the estate you are sitting on, which changes a simple menu entirely
- Porcini and white truffle from late September, artichokes and cime di rapa in winter
Staff
Hiring here
Florence and Siena supply well trained, formally polite service staff at rates that look like a mistake to a London host. Above forty guests, hire through one coordinator rather than assembling a crew yourself.
Rules
The paperwork nobody mentions
- Wedding paperwork
- Tuscany runs on weddings and the administration is well trodden: civil ceremonies need municipal booking, and villas have a licence regime that determines guest numbers and music hours.
- Music curfew
- Most municipalities stop amplified music at midnight, many villas earlier by their own licence. This is the single most common surprise for foreign hosts.
- SCIA and caterers
- A legitimate Italian caterer works under a notified food business registration. Ask for it for any event above thirty people, because the villa will.

Read onQuestions hosts ask
What does a Tuscan wedding banquet cost per guest?
For a serious seated dinner with a full brigade, rentals, staff and wine service, 180 to 300 euros a guest in 2026, with the food and kitchen share around 130 to 190. Below 150 euros a guest something is being left out, usually staff hours.
Can we have music until two?
Rarely. Most villas hold a licence that stops amplified music at midnight, sometimes 23:00, and the fine falls on the owner. Indoor music in a cellar is the usual workaround.
Is a local chef better than bringing ours?
For a Tuscan menu, almost always. A local chef knows which butcher has Chianina on a Tuesday and which estate will sell oil by the tin, and those two facts outrank technique here.
